the wholesale electricity prices in Spain, which serves as a reference for customers at the regulated tariff or PVPC, says goodbye to the annual lows of 2022, the most eventful year in its history, which led to an energy policy agreed between European partners.
The 1.82 euros/megawatt hour (MWh) that will be paid this New Year’s Eve are only with the exception of one year when the “pool” closed with an average price of €210.2/MWhit’s a 88% more expensive only around 112 euros/MWh in 2021, due to various factors, including the war in Ukraine and high temperatures.

What factors influence price increases?
The price escalation affecting most of Europe is due, among other things, to the rise in the price of gas on international markets, which is used in combined cycle power plants and which sets the market price for most hours, and increase in the value of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission rights.
Government measures
The government has extended until April 30 the reduction of taxes included in the electricity bill paid by all consumers in order to mitigate the negative effect that the increase in the price of electricity has on citizens.
Concretely, the reductions in VAT from 21% to 10% and in the special tax on electricity from 5.11% to 0.5%, the legal minimum, have been extended until April 30. However, the suspension of the 7% generation tax paid by companies will only be maintained, for the moment, until March 31.
